Joseph Winters

Based in London, I am a director and producer of theatre and arts.

In 2020 I founded The Shipwright, a new theatre in Deptford’s Master Shipwright’s house, described as “exquisite, ambitious and inquisitive” by the Guardian. We produce theatre and music in two fortnightly seasons each year: an outdoor summer spectacular, and an intimate indoor winter festival.

In 2023 I became Artistic Director of Peckham Levels, leading the multi-disciplinary cultural and community programming across the site. In what was once a multi-storey carpark, we now produce “everything you need under one roof” (Evening Standard).

As an emerging director I worked alongside Michael Longhurst, Natalie Abrahami, Rupert Goold and Robert Icke among others. From 2018-2019 I was Resident Director at the Almeida Theatre and in 2023 I was Staff Director of English Touring Opera. In 2020 I filmed RUSH by Willi Richards, starring Rupert Everett, Omari Douglas and Daniel Boyd for BBC Culture in Quarantine, Executive Produced by Stephen Daldry.

I have taught at the University of Oxford, Central St Martins, Goldsmiths and Rose Bruford College as a visiting lecturer.
